5) Evidence - Weather Or Not
I reviewed this album earlier this year on Kil's Apt 5B Podcast along with Tone from Enter Da Dome. During the podcast I shared that I had no expectations for this album. Mostly because I hadn't actually heard a full Evidence album prior to this one. I thought Dilated Peoples was dope but just never fully dove into Evidence's solo work. I listened to this album a lot as I was preparing for the podcast and honestly I didn't mind one bit.
Evidence put together a very dope album where the beats and rhymes compliment each-other perfectly. I'd go as far as saying this is one of the best produced albums of the year thanks to contributions from Alchemist, Nottz, DJ Premier, Budgie & Evidence himself. The album is riddled with bangers & just flows well in a cohesive manner.
Even with the top notch production Evidence's performance is a big reason Weather Or Not made my list. He really displays good versatility from track to track. On cuts like The Factory & Jim Dean he hits you with quotable bars over straight boom bap; then turns around and gives you introspective tracks like Powder Cocaine, Rain Drops & the album closer By Your Side Too. The later is his most personal moment on the album where he addresses his wife's battle with cancer and the story of how they found out.
This album is full of features & all fit the album well. Evidence recruits some familiar collaborators (Slug, Defari, Alchemist & Rakaa). He also got Styles P & Rapsody together on Love Is A Funny Thing! The guest emcees strengthen the album, providing a nice contrast to what Evidence brings to the table. Maybe that's a nice way to say that it breaks up the monotony of Evidence's slow flow, but it really does give this album the balance it needs to have strong replay value.
